Mechanical Shoe Seal with Insulation Kit

Mechanical Shoe Seal with Insulation Kit

The Mechanical Shoe Seal with Insulation Kit is a high-performance primary rim seal system designed for External Floating Roof Tanks (EFRTs) to minimize hydrocarbon vapor emissions while maintaining effective sealing between the floating roof and the tank shell. The spring-loaded mechanical shoes continuously adjust to shell irregularities, ensuring reliable sealing throughout the roof's movement. The integrated Insulation Kit electrically isolates the metallic seal components from the floating roof, reducing the possibility of lightning-induced current transfer and rim-space sparking in accordance with modern lightning protection practices. Manufactured from corrosion-resistant materials such as SS304/SS316, galvanized steel, and chemical-resistant seal fabrics, the system offers long service life and dependable performance in demanding refinery and terminal environments. It is designed in accordance with API 650, API RP 545 Rev. 1, API 653, NFPA 780, and applicable environmental regulations governing floating roof tank emission control and lightning protection.

Description

A Mechanical Shoe Seal with Insulation Kit is a primary rim seal system used on External Floating Roof Tanks (EFRTs) to minimize hydrocarbon vapor emissions while maintaining an effective seal between the floating roof and the tank shell. The spring-loaded mechanical shoes continuously follow shell irregularities to provide reliable sealing. The Insulation Kit electrically isolates the metallic shoe assembly from the floating roof, helping reduce lightning current transfer and minimizing the possibility of rim-space sparking in accordance with modern lightning protection practices.

Typical Application

• External Floating Roof Tanks (EFRTs) storing crude oil, gasoline, diesel, naphtha, jet fuel, aviation fuel, condensate, and other petroleum products.
• Petrochemical storage tanks.
• Refineries, oil terminals, tank farms, and chemical plants.
• Suitable for new installations as well as retrofitting existing floating roof tanks.

Guidelines / Standards

• API 650 – Welded Tanks for Oil Storage (Appendix C – External Floating Roof Tanks).
• API RP 545 Rev. 1 – Lightning Protection of Aboveground Storage Tanks for Flammable or Combustible Liquids.
• API 653 – Inspection, Repair, Alteration and Reconstruction of Storage Tanks.
• NFPA 780 – Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems.
• EPA 40 CFR Part 60 & Part 63 – VOC emission control requirements (where applicable).
• EN 14015 – European design standard for aboveground welded steel storage tanks (where specified).
